Exterior paint only performs as well as the conditions it cures in. In Westchester County and across Fairfield and Litchfield Counties, the weather window is shorter than many homeowners expect, so planning ahead makes a real difference.
Late spring through early fall is the main season
For most homes in our area, exterior painting runs from late spring into fall. Days are long, surfaces dry quickly after rain, and overnight temperatures usually stay high enough for paint to cure. Early fall is often ideal: cooler afternoons, lower humidity and fewer thunderstorms than mid-summer.
What actually matters: temperature, moisture and sun
- Surface and air temperature. Every paint has a minimum application temperature printed on the label. Many standard exterior acrylics call for about 50°F, while some newer products are rated lower. It also needs to stay above that minimum overnight while the paint cures.
- Dew and humidity. Paint applied late in the afternoon in cool months can be hit by evening dew before it sets, which can cause streaking or surfactant leaching. We schedule exterior work so coatings have time to dry before the dew point.
- Direct sun. Painting a wall in full summer sun can make paint dry too fast and show lap marks. We follow the shade around the house through the day.
- Dry wood. Siding and trim need time to dry after rain or power washing. Painting over damp wood is one of the most common causes of peeling.
Northern Litchfield County has a shorter window
Towns like Salisbury, Sharon and Kent see colder nights earlier in the fall and later in the spring than southern Westchester. If your home is in the Litchfield Hills, booking exterior work for summer or early fall is the safer plan.
Coastal homes need extra prep
Homes near Long Island Sound in Rye, Larchmont, Greenwich, Darien and Westport deal with salt air and humidity that break down paint and caulk faster. Thorough washing, fresh caulk and spot-priming bare wood before painting help the new finish last.
Book early
Good exterior painters fill their spring and summer calendars early. Getting an estimate in late winter or early spring gives you the best choice of dates, and lets you pick colors without rushing.
What you can do in the off-season
Winter is a good time for interior painting, cabinet refinishing, drywall repair and trim work. Many homeowners schedule interior projects in the colder months and exterior projects once the weather turns.
